This is another of the paradoxes that makes life so interesting. I’ve heard it said that change is the only constant in the universe, and of course the French have long observed that la plus ça change, la plus ça reste le même.
Ok Go, the band who led the renaissance in dancing on treadmills and Rube Goldberg machines, took a crack at this topic in their tune White Knuckles. The song talks about remorse and consequences, enticing us to let go of the former and deal with the latter.
As a father, I find myself thinking these days about the loops through which life cycles. My son is 10, he has his friends and his life. He made the Basketball team and although he was thrilled about this, he didn’t even know the rules of the game. They had one practice then went right into their first tournament which was fun but because he’s not very good, he doesn’t get to play much and he’s disappointed.
How to explain to him that this is always the way: the better players get to play more, and so they get even better. I watch him go through cycles of frustration and remember how it felt because I was a big fish in a small pond, and then I was a small fish in a big one (which sometimes feels like it’s getting bigger). In a society that places great value on winning, and little value on communication eveyone wants the result but very few can explain how to get there so the fast few hog the ball and the rest wait for a pass.
I tell my son to do his best and that if he really wants to be chosen he has to work very hard, but if he doesn’t get chosen, that’s okay too. And this is one of the things that makes Art important. The guys from Ok Go didn’t get the 42nd most watched video in YouTube history because they were the alpha males of the treadmill dancing world – they did it with creativity, with a vision, and with determination. These places where we go to express ourselves, free from the elbowing and the score clocks are very important.
Ok Go says this in the tune:
So just have fun, it’s far enough / Everybody needs to sleep at night, everybody needs a crutch / But couldn’t good, be good enough / cause nothin’ ever doesn’t change / but nuthin’ ever changes much
Amen
